Colon and Rectal Cancer Trial Results
1.  Oxaliplatin-Based Regimen Prolongs Survival After Colorectal Cancer Surgery 3
(Posted: 06/01/2003, Updated: 06/14/2004) - The oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy combination known as FOLFOX significantly improved disease-free survival compared to 5-FU and leucovorin when used as adjuvant therapy (after surgery) in patients with stage II and stage III colorectal cancer.

2.  Bevacizumab (Avastin™) Improves Survival in Metastatic Colorectal Cancer 4
(Posted: 06/01/2003, Updated: 06/14/2004) - Patients with newly diagnosed metastatic colon cancer who received the therapeutic agent bevacizumab (Avastin™) along with the chemotherapy combination known as IFL had substantially longer overall survival times than patients who received IFL but with a placebo instead of bevacizumab. With these results, bevacizumab becomes the first anti-angiogenesis agent to prove effective in a randomized Phase III trial.

3.  Laparoscopic Surgery a Good Alternative for Some Colon Cancer Patients 5
(Posted: 06/02/2004) - Patients with colon cancer experienced similar rates of cancer recurrence whether they were treated with laparoscopically assisted surgery or conventional open abdominal surgery (colectomy) in a large randomized clinical trial.

4.  Virtual Colonoscopy An Effective Screening Alternative for Colorectal Cancer 6
(Posted: 12/08/2003) - In a study of people at average risk for colorectal cancer, a screening technique known as virtual colonoscopy was just as accurate as traditional colonoscopy at detecting potential signs of colon or rectal cancer, and was less invasive. The results were published in the December 4, 2003, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

5.  National Cancer Institute Trial Yields New Data on Colon Cancer Screening Test 7
(Posted: 07/01/2003) - New data from the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial give fresh insight into the appropriate screening intervals for colorectal cancer after a negative exam.
