What is the EIRC?

The Electronic Information Resource Center (EIRC) is an on-line portal providing access to information about and electronic versions of outreach and educational materials that have been produced by or used by COEPs, many of which are not cataloged anywhere else. Materials include:

  • K-12 lesson plans
  • Meeting reports
  • Brochures
  • Posters
  • Training manuals
  • Newsletters
  • Web sites
  • And much more!

The EIRC database contains information about every material in the COEP Resource Center collection. New materials are added to the collection regularly. The following kinds of information are available for every material:

  • Comprehensive bibliographic information (title, author, publication year, subject, format, etc.)
  • The target audience
  • An abstract
  • The name of the COEP that produced the material or supplied it to the COEP Resource Center
  • A link to the full-text electronic version of the material, if available
  • How to obtain a hardcopy, especially if an electronic version is not available

You can search the EIRC database by entering words, phrases, or numbers that you are interested in, or you can browse or download a PDF-format index of materials that are contained in the EIRC.

About Searching the EIRC Database

The EIRC database contains information about and electronic versions of environmental health outreach and educational materials that have been produced by or used by COEPs. New materials are added regularly.

You may search through bibliographic information and abstracts of all materials in the database, or you may search through the full-text of materials (for a limited number of materials). Note: You can view and download full-text versions of the materials using either method.

About the Bibliographic Information Search

The EIRC database contains comprehensive bibliographic information and an abstract for every material in the COEP Resource Center collection. It is organized, like most databases, into sections called "fields." For example, "Title," "Author," "Audience," "Subject," and "Abstract" are each separate fields. Together these fields make up the full description of each material in the database; this full description is called a "record."

Using the Bibliographic Information Search, you can specify words, phrases, or numbers that you would like to find in any part of a record, or you can specify that you would like to search only in certain fields.

After you enter your criteria, the results will display a list all materials that match your criteria. From this list you can select any materials for which you would like to see the full, detailed record. For any material you select, you will then see all the material's bibliographic information and can read its abstract; download the full-text of the material, if available; or find out how to obtain a hardcopy.

About the Full-Text Materials Search

Some of the electronic, full-text versions of COEP materials in the EIRC database can be searched directly. Using the Full-Text Materials Search, you can specify words, phrases, or numbers that you would like to find in any part of a material's text. After you enter your criteria, the results will display a list of all materials that match your criteria. From this list you can select materials for which you would like to see the full-text document.

This search may be particularly useful if you are looking for any mention of a word, phrase, or name anywhere in a document, even if that word, phrase, or name is not the main focus of the material. [The main subjects of a material are described in the "Subject" and "Abstract" fields, which you can search using the Bibliographic Information Search.]

The main drawback to using the Full-Text Materials Search is that only a limited number of the materials in the EIRC are searchable by this method, for two primary reasons:

  1. A full-text version of some materials is not available, either because of copyright restrictions or due to a non-print format - video tape, for example

  2. Not all full-text versions of materials in the EIRC are searchable. For example, some of the PDF files in the EIRC are actually "images" of the document itself. These images look just like printed pages and so humans can read them just fine, but they are not made up of digital characters that a computer can recognize as text.

If you use the Full-Text Materials Search, keep in mind that there may be other materials of interest to you in the EIRC that cannot be found by this search method. Try the Bibliographic Information Search if you do not find what you're looking for.

Index of Materials

Although searching the EIRC database is the probably most convenient way to identify materials of interest when you're on-line, you may wish to have access to information about EIRC materials when you're "off-line," too.

The indexes below are available for on-line viewing, as well as downloading and printing. Each contains basic information (title, author, publication year, language, audience, format, COEP, and Accession Number) about the materials.

Note:You must install Adobe Acrobat Reader * to view PDF files. For more information on installing Acrobat and configuring your browser to view PDF files, go to Adobe Acrobat Support * .

Find more details about a particular material (including abstracts and information about availability) in the detailed listing by Accession Number:
