States Feeling Medicaid's Squeeze
New Survey Shows Soaring Health Care Costs are Crowding Out Other Priorities
Woman in wheelchair Despite rebounds in their fiscal conditions, state budgets across the country are still struggling under the increasing weight of Medicaid, a new survey has found. A latest report from the National Association of State Budget Officers (NASBO) showed that, for the first time, states are expected to spend more on Medicaid than on elementary or secondary education in fiscal year 2004.
