Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC) at the EROS Data Center (EDC)

Summary:

The objective of the Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC) is to promote the interdisciplinary study and understanding of the integrated Earth system by providing data for the study, characterization, and monitoring of biologic, geologic, hydrologic, ecologic, and other conditions and processes existing and operating at or near the land surface. The LP DAAC is developing capabilities to ingest, process, manage, archive, and distribute land-related EOS data and to assist users in their search for and acquisition of data products.

Data Center code for the LP DAAC on the EOS Data Gateway:

LPDAAC:   EOSDIS and Non-EOSDIS Core System data sets.

For more information about the products and services from the LP DAAC at the EROS Data Center (EDC), see the LP DAAC Home Page.

1. Data Center Overview:

Data Center Long Name, Data Center Acronym:

Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center, LP DAAC

Data Center Introduction:

The LP DAAC is one of several DAACs that are part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) in which the DAACs individually support specific scientific disciplines (e.g., the LP DAAC supports land processes data activities).

The LP DAAC resides at the U.S. Geological Survey's EROS Data Center (EDC), located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Part of the Survey's National Mapping Division, the EDC is a data management, systems development, and research field center established in the early 1970's to ingest, process, archive, and distribute data from NASA Landsat satellites. With millions of holdings providing global coverage, EDC's archive contains the world's largest collection of aircraft photography and satellite imagery.

2. Detailed Description:

The LP DAAC's EOS-related development activities (i.e., capabilities to ingest, process, archive, manage, and distribute land-related EOS data) complements the EROS Data Center's mission, which includes a broad range of activities in the management of global observations data. In addition to its EOS-related development activities, the LP DAAC supports a variety of pre-EOS data sets (e.g., digital image data collected by various NASA airborne sensors; Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer data; Landsat Pathfinder data; Spaceborne Imaging Radar-C data; and Digital Elevation Model data).

As a strong participant in the Earth Science Enterprise initiative, the LP DAAC provides data to scientists from around the world to improve the understanding of and the ability to predict changes in the Earth system.
