What's New on NSF Web

Welcome to the new National Science Foundation web site This site has recently undergone a major redesign in appearance and functionality in order to bring you a number of new features. These new features will allow you to explore the diverse science and engineering information offered by the Foundation with greater ease and effectiveness.

EASY NAVIGATION

You can now access all major site links directly from the NSF home page. New "dynamic" pulldown menus featured on the top navigation bar connect you quickly to the areas of the site you use most frequently.

For example, all information about funding is now found under Funding in the top navigation bar. Within Funding, the new Getting Started section under How to Obtain Funding provides all the links you may need on one page.

Publications now includes the entire on-line document system, including a link to the most popular documents, what's new, and the search/browse function.

News & Media includes information from the Office of Public Affairs as well as news from other divisions and News Highlights.

About NSF contains information about visiting NSF, NSF's budget, mission and more.

Note: Dynamic menus are only available to those using recent browsers such as IE 4 and 5, and Netscape 4. Click on Customize at the bottom right of the home page if you would like to toggle the menus on or off.

JUMP STATIONS

The NSF home page now features pulldown lists that let you "jump" ahead to indexes of information for specialized audiences (Specialized Information For) or directly to the home pages of NSF Offices or the Staff Directory (NSF Staff and Organizations).

NEW LOOK

Clean, attractive pages increase readability and thereby reduce eye fatigue. Consistency of design helps you visually cue in on what you need. You don't have to hunt for your navigation bar (it's always at the top) or your menus (they're always on the left). We've made searching easier, and the site map is still there if you need it.

CUSTOMIZATION

You can now control some of the features of the NSF web site. Click on Customize at the bottom right of many of the pages on our site to toggle the dynamic menus on or off, or to change the color contrast of the links on our web site. If you use these customization options, the NSF site will set a "cookie" that can be read only by the NSF server. You do not have to accept the cookie if you choose not to set these preferences.

TEXT-ONLY VERSION

If you prefer a text-only version of the NSF web site, you can generate one automatically using Betsie, the BBC Education Text to Speech Internet Enhancer. Betsie linearizes tables, translates ALT values, and removes JavaScript from web pages. In addition, we have customized Betsie to turn links to PDF files into links that translate the PDF files into HTML files using the Adobe Document Server. You can access the Betsie-generated version of our site at http://www.nsf.gov/cgi-bin/access/parser.pl/www.nsf.gov or through a link at the top of the NSF home page available to screen reading devices.

FASTER LOADING

Regardless of the speed of your Internet connection, our new site should load faster.

WE'D LIKE TO HEAR FROM YOU
