Violent crimes included are homicide, rape, robbery,
and both simple and aggravated assault.
Sources: Data for rape, sexual assault robbery, and assault are from The National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), a survey of households ongoing since 1973 that interviews about 80,000 persons age 12 and older in 43,000 households twice each year about their victimizations from crime and includes those crimes not reported to the police. In addition to the violent crimes, the survey reports on property crimes including theft, household burglary, and motor vehicle theft. Homicide data are from the FBI's Uniform Crime Reports which collects information on crimes reported to law enforcement authorities by victims and voluntarily submitted by the agencies to the FBI.
