The application of information technology in the pursuit of public health, i.e., public health informatics,
has grown dramatically in recent years and is increasingly essential to the breadth of public health activities
including emergency preparedness and response. Ensuring the mission of public health activities is achieved
requires improved strategic application, integration and consistency of public health informatics. Without this,
we risk failing to meet critical needs of, and taking advantage of significant benefits for, CDC and the nation.
Providing the cornerstones for achieving integrated and consistent standards for public health informatics is
the Director's Decision on Public Health Informatics Improvements at CDC/ATSDR.
This document establishes key governance and management responsibilities, standard processes to advance the
specificity and clarity of PHIN (Public Health Information Network) standards and system compliance and overall
CDC leadership and coordination of PHIN.
