Our Structure

As part of the Office of the Director, the Office of Communication contains the following Divisions:

What We Do

The CDC Office of Communication enhances CDC public health programs by promoting effective ways to communicate with CDC's key audiences. Our goal is to make sure CDC's quality health information is presented in ways that motivate people to take action for better health. We work with CDC staff and their partners to help them reach people with the right information as it is needed.

Throughout the CDC there are different Centers/Institutes and Offices. Within these CIOs there are individual Offices of Communication. Our office works closely with these individual offices to provide them with services such as access to syndicated research and contracts.

How We Do It

Our communication specialists bring expertise to CDC from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines. We consult with CDC staff and CDC partners in the following practice areas:

  • Strategic communication planning
  • Social marketing approaches
  • Health communication research
  • Health campaign development
  • Audience research & audiences (e.g. youth, multi-cultural)
  • Channel strategies (e.g. entertainment education, Internet)
  • Media relations and public affairs

Our teams work together to achieve integrated communication for health programs.

Our key initiatives for 2003 include:

  • Emergency Risk Communication
  • Consumer Health Information
  • Youth Media Campaign
  • Social Marketing Capacity Building for States
