Program Announcement for Research on Learning and Education (ROLE) Program

The ROLE program encourages those proposers interested in ROLE to also consider TYPE 2 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Talent Expansion Program awards. STEP, has two options. Type 1 grants are implementation grants to increase the number of students obtaining associate or bachelor degrees in STEM. The Type 2 grants support educational research projects on associate or baccalaureate degree attainment in STEM. Please see that solicitation for more information.

Examples of Successful ROLE Proposals

In order to assist those preparing and submittting proposals to the Research on Learning and Education (ROLE) program, we provide six examples of research projects that were funded in 2000 (the first year of the role program). These projects were chosen from the larger set of successful ROLE awards because they exemplify some balance of research topics, education levels, and methods across the four quadrants of the program. Please note that your research proposal and topic may differ substantially from the examples provided. The examples are offered to provide greater awareness of what constitutes a successful ROLE proposal and to illuminate various aspects of the review and award decision.

Below you will find two files for each project: (1) the proposal (containing an abstract, narrative, and references) and (2) a summary of the comments of the merit reviewers and program officials in making award recommendations. Although the summaries draw on actual points made by the proposal reviewers, review panelists, and program officers, they are not the actual reviews. We recognize that all proposals and reviews have strengths and weaknesses. We therefore offer these only as examples of typical successful projects.

We hope prospective investigators will find these examples helpful in preparing proposals to the ROLE program. Please check the Welcome section of the REC homepage for related materials concerning REC awards, program guidelines, and news items.
