At the request of the Department of State, NSF administers a program of NATO Postdoctoral Fellowships to promote a closer collaboration among the scientists of member and NATO Partner countries. Approximately 20 fellowships will be made to US institutions that would like to host a scientist from a NATO Partner Country. Eligible fields of research are: mathematics, engineering, computer and information science, geosciences, the physical, biological, social, behavioral, and economic sciences, the history and philosophy of science, and interdisciplinary areas comprised of two or more of these fields. Research in the teaching and learning of science, mathematics, technology, and engineering is also eligible for support.
The program provides a monthly stipend of $2,750, plus dependency and travel allowances, for a tenure of 12 months.
Scientists and engineers from NATO partner countries, who are within five years
of their doctoral degree, are eligible to be nominated by a scientific advisor
at US institutions.
The deadline for the 2004 competition was Tuesday, December 9, 2003, by 5:00 p. m. proposer's local time. There will not be anymore competitions for this program.
Applications must be submitted electronically using the National Science
Foundation's online FastLane system. Referees of applicants and scientific
advisors of scientists from NATO partner countries can submit a Reference
Report Form or a Scientific Advisors Statement using FastLane. Security is
provided to ensure that applications, references, and sponsoring scientist
statements can be seen only by authorized persons. To access the FastLane

The scientific advisor at the host institution (also known as the sponsoring
scientist) is responsible for ensuring the completeness of application materials
on behalf of scientists from NATO Partner Countries before forwarding the complete
application to the Sponsored Research Office (SRO). The SRO is responsible for
submitting the application to NSF. Please refer to the program guidelines for more in-depth
