National Program of Cancer Registries

United States Cancer Statistics

2000 Incidence

Cover of the U.S. Cancer Statistics: 2000 Incidence report United States Cancer Statistics: 2000 Incidence is a joint publication of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Bethesda, Maryland, and the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR) in Springfield, Illinois. This is the second annual joint report from the two federal programs that support population-based cancer registries in the United States: CDC’s National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) and NCI’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program, in collaboration with NAACCR. This report contains official federal government cancer statistics for more than 1 million invasive cancer cases diagnosed during 2000 among residents of 41 states, 6 metropolitan areas, and the District of Columbia, covering geographic areas in which approximately 84% of the U.S. population reside. Data from population-based central cancer registries in these states and metropolitan areas meet the selected criteria for inclusion in this report (see “Registry Eligibility Criteria”).

The age-adjusted rates presented in the current report are adjusted to the 2000 U.S. standard population, consistent with the 1999 United States Cancer Statistics report. In addition, this year's report will feature new population estimates from the 2000 decennial census data. Caution should be used when comparing these data with previously published cancer incidence rates that were adjusted to the 1970 U.S. standard population or were calculated using denominators based on the 1990 census.

Two new additions have been made to this report: (1) the race categories have been expanded to include cancer incidence for Asian/Pacific Islanders for the United States and (2) a series of tables reflecting the incidence of childhood cancers have been added. These additions were made to provide more comprehensive data while maintaining high quality data standards.

1999 Incidence

United States Cancer Statistics: 1999 Incidence is a joint publication of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the National Cancer Institute (NCI), in collaboration with the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR). This report is the first set of official federal cancer incidence statistics from each state that meets high-quality data standards. The two federal programs supporting population-based cancer registries in the United States are the CDC’s National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) and NCI’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program. The report contains cancer statistics for more than 1 million invasive cancer cases diagnosed during 1999 among residents of 37 states, 6 metropolitan areas, and the District of Columbia, geographic areas in which approximately 78% of the U.S. population reside.
