Transportation
On January 9, 2003 Josefina G. Carbonell, Assistant Secretary
for Aging, and Jennifer Dorn, Federal Transit Administrator, signed
a Memorandum
of Understanding (PDF) to promote the coordination of transportation
services for America’s seniors.
Assistant Secretary Carbonell noted that the overall goal of
the Memorandum activities is to make it easier for local transportation
providers to serve older people and help them remain independent
and in their communities. Administrator Dorn agreed that common
sense transportation solutions are the key to promoting independence
and opportunity for older adults.
In February 2003, the Administration on Aging and Federal Transit
Administration finalized an Action
Plan (PDF) for Calendar Year 2003. The Action Plan includes
activities that will occur in 2003 to begin implementation of
the Memorandum of Understanding.
The partnership between the Administration on Aging and the Federal
Transit Administration embodies the spirit and purpose of President
Bush’s New Freedom Initiative.
This website is provided by the Administration on Aging to highlight
activities and resources related to the Memorandum of Understanding
with the FTA. The goal of this section is two-fold:
- to provide useful information to human services and transportation
providers to improve the coordination of transportation services
to older adults, and
- to provide useful information to older adults so that they
may drive as long as is safely possible and to easily access
transportation alternatives when that is necessary. The website
is organized around the objectives outlined in the Memorandum.

World Health Day 2004: road safety
World Health Day is celebrated on April 7th each year.
This year’s theme, Road Safety, focuses on pedestrian
safety, occupant protection, impaired driving, and helmet use.
On this
day around the globe, hundreds of organizations will host events
to help raise awareness about road traffic injuries, their
grave consequences and enormous costs to society. They will
also contribute
to spreading the word that such injuries can be prevented.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will engage
in a number of domestic and international activities for World
Health Day, and is encouraging local communities also to get
involved. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention's Injury
Center 's World Health Day 2004 Web site includes materials that
comprise the Information Kit, Family Road Safety: Protect the
