Area Information

Established in 1943 by the Federal Government, Oak Ridge, Tennessee is located in the valley between the Cumberland and Great Smoky Mountains. First known as the Manhattan Project, it was secretly developed for the purpose of making nuclear weapons, which were used to end World War II. As one of the world’s greatest research centers, Oak Ridge is considered a progressive, diverse city with an unparalleled commitment to excellence.

Today, Oak Ridge is a mecca for scientific and technological innovations. In addition to ORISE, Oak Ridge is also home to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, a multiprogram science and technology laboratory managed for the U.S. Department of Energy by UT-Battelle, LLC.

The city offers a variety of cultural activities such as the Oak Ridge Civic Ballet, Oak Ridge Symphony, and the Oak Ridge Art Center to name a few. Oak Ridge also offers two excellent museums that broaden the learning experience for residents of all ages. The American Museum of Science and Energy boasts the world’s largest collection of energy exhibits and provides insight to the history of the city and the technologies it has produced. Emphasizing science, art, and history, the Children’s Museum features innovative exhibitions, programs and workshops for all ages.
