About Oceanography, University of East Anglia, Norwich, England
Information about oceanography. This list is maintained by voluntary effort, and by the goodwill of School of Mathematics UEA in allowing it to use school facilities.

To Snare a Smoker   American Museum of Natural History
You've probably seen or heard of natural hot springs on land, like Old Faithful at Yellowstone National Park. Similar phenomena occur under the oceans within midocean ridge volcanoes and are called deep-sea hydrothermal (hot water) vents. They are known as black smokers – learn more about them at this site.

  AquaNet
Subject areas covered include aquaculture, conservation, fisheries, limnology, marine science and oceanography, maritime heritage, ocean engineering, and seafood.

Aquatic Safari   Aquatic Safari
Discover fun facts and view beautiful images of the more mysterious creatures found in the ocean.

Welcome to Nye Labs Online   Bill Nye, the Science Guy
There's lots of fun science stuff to do on this site!

Careers in Oceanography, Marine Science and Marine Biology
This directory of web sites related to marine careers is divided into three sections: general guides for oceanography and marine science; guides for marine biology, marine mammals, zoos and aquariums; and other guides covering all of science.

Careers in Oceanography and Marine-Related Fields
This site was developed by the Office of Naval Research and is very informative.

Corals are Alive   Coral Research Cam, Waikiki Aquarium
The Waikiki Aquarium has maintained cultures of living corals since 1978 and now has the oldest and perhaps largest collection of living corals in the U.S.

Descent to Mid-Atlantic Ridge: A Live Expedition
A team of scientists from eight universities share their experiences as they guide the deep submersible ALVIN to explore undersea mountains of the mid-Atlantic Ridge.

  Dive and Discover
Join scientists as they dive to the mid-ocean ridge thousands of meters deep. Explore towering underwater volcanoes, black smokers, and bizarre creatures that live there.

Moon   Earth and Moon Viewer
You can view either a map of the Earth showing the day and night regions at this moment, or view the Earth from the Sun, the Moon, the night side of the Earth, above any location on the planet specified by latitude, longitude and altitude, from a satellite in Earth orbit, or above various cities around the globe.

  ExploreZone
We focus on the exciting fields of Earth, space and weather science, and we cover a sprinkling of other hot topics in the edge.

Extreme 2002 Mission to the Abyss
The mission of the Extreme 2002 deep-sea expedition will be to explore one of the most demanding environments on Earth — super-hot hydrothermal vents nearly 2 miles deep on the Pacific Ocean floor.

Jason Project   The Jason Project
In order to bring the thrill of discovery to millions of students worldwide, Dr. Ballard founded the JASON Project, a year-round scientific expedition designed to excite and engage students in science and technology and to motivate and provide professional development for teachers.

What would you like to learn today? Would you like to learn about marine mammals? Would you like to learn about the science and careers surrounding marine mammals? Then check out this site!

New England Aquarium   New England Aquarium
The New England Aquarium is much more than a place to see aquatic life. Our focus is on raising people's awareness of the environment through exhibits, education programs, public forums, and outreach programs. Our work extends beyond Central Wharf, Boston to conservation and research projects worldwide-from helping understand environmental changes in Lake Victoria, Africa to saving the endangered Hector's dolphin in New Zealand.

  New Millenium Observatory
NeMO is a seafloor observatory at an active underwater volcano, Axial Seamount. A volcanic eruption occured at Axial in January 1998, destroying some hydrothermal vent sites and creating new ones. Since then NeMO scientists have been assessing the impact of the eruption and documenting the on-going changes in Axial's summit caldera. Through the site, you can access fly-through movies, virtual-reality panoramas, and video clips from 6 sites located in Axial's summit caldera. Also available are new curriculum materials based on NeMO research.

NOVA Online Adventures – Into the Abyss
A mile and a half beneath the sea off the Pacific Northwest coast, a volcanic ridge has given birth to towering structures that spew toxic, superheated water. The structures, known as black smoker chimneys, are home to bizarre life forms that thrive far beyond the reach of the sun's light. Follow the daring attempt of an ambitious expedition to retrieve several of these black smokers from the seafloor.
