World Ocean Database 2001. Geographically Sorted Online Data

Retrieval software on this site requires a browser with JavaScript enabled (e.g. Netscape 3.0 or IE 3.0 or higher). To upgrade (if necessary) your browsers use the following URL: Netscape, Internet Explorer
Data are organized by instrument type. Within each instrument directory, the data are stored geographically by World Meteorological Organization (WMO) 10° squares. Data are compressed and stored in ASCII format. Utilities to decompress the data are provided under UTILS directory. A description of the data format can be found in the DOC directory. For any questions about this product, please use World Ocean Database 2001 Help Desk.
Data are updated monthly with corrections/changes as information is received. If at least one station in a WMO/year file has been updated, the entire file is recreated. Each station in the file will then have a time stamp to show on what date the station was updated. The time stamp is found under second header #99, and is of the form [4digit year][julian year day] (ex. 2002001 means the station was updated January, 2002). If there is no time stamp on a station, it has not been updated since the release of WOD01. For more information on updates, see the updates page.

NOTE:

Data with a time stamp prior to January 1st, 2003 may have missing or wrong quality control flags. The missing/wrong quality control flags have been fixed. If you downloaded data (geographically sorted, time sorted, or updates) between October 8th, 2002 and January 9th, 2003, you may have data with the missing/wrong quality control flags.
Furthermore, some standard level (STD) data for ocean station data (OSD) without any time stamps (data as released on either of the CD versions) may have missing density inversion flags for some temperature and salinity measurements. If these flags are important to your work, please download the necessary data from the online data, where the problems have been corrected. These problems only affect the quality control flags, not the measured data themselves.

IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT DOWNLOADING AND READING GZIP COMPRESSED DATA FILES!
Data can be retrived by WMO square or by Instrument Type

To download data:

  • Select data by WMO square or Instrument Type
  • Select ocean basin and observed or standard depth data. You will get a map of the WMO squares or the Instrument Type list
Search by WMO square Pacific Ocean -                   Observed Depth Data / Standard Depth Data
Atlantic and Indian Ocean - Observed Depth Data / Standard Depth Data
Search by Instrument Type Pacific Ocean -                    Observed Depth Data / Standard Depth Data
Atlantic and Indian Ocean - Observed Depth Data / Standard Depth Data
  • SURF - surface data are not geographically sorted. The entire dataset is available in a single file SURF_ALL.gz , (18.3 MB)
ODV cannot yet fully display surface-only data.
