Question: What Media should be used when a
manufacturer (mfg) wants to send their photos in for WebFLIS/FEDLOG to use:
(i.e. CD of photographs of NSNs).
We prefer to receive images as JPEG (.jpg), GIF (.gif) or
TIFF (.tif) on CD/ROM. Any submission must include a cross-reference linking
each photograph to its respective NSN.
Question: What type of Electronic Media should be
used: (i.e., Email, CWT drop box, File Transfer Program (FTP))?
We prefer to receive images as JPEG (.jpg), GIF (.gif) or
TIFF (.tif) on CD/ROM. Any submission must include a cross-reference linking
each photograph to its respective NSN.
Question: Who is the point of contact for this
program, phone number, etc.?
DLIS-K is ultimately the POC for any photographs that will be
assigned or designated to an NSN in the FLIS database. Use the CDL or DLIS-KCS
as a starting point. There is no phone number; we would handle questions by mail
or email. The mailing address is:
DLIS-CDL (Central Data library)
ATTN: WebPhotos (Rm 1B-6B)
Federal Center
74 Washington Av N, STE 7
Battle Creek, MI 49017-3084
Questions/comments only may be emailed to the following
address: photographs@dla.mil
Question: What is the length of time to get pictures
loaded into the product/system (i.e. FEDLOG, WEBFLIS)?
There is no set time. A submitter should not be guaranteed
that the photos would be used at all, nor expect to see them after any pre-set
time period. There will be a number of considerations such as suitability of
photos, requirements for sanitizing, possible pre-existing photo for an NSN,
backlog ahead of this submittal, other priority workload, etc.
Question: Who will be responsible for adding pictures
into the system (DLIS K, IGIRDER, manufacturer, etc.)?
DLIS-K is ultimately the organization that will be
responsible for loading the images from whatever sources they deem appropriate,
after they have been processed as appropriate.
Question: Are there costs to the manufacturer?
No costs to the supplier of the photos outside of the cost of
the media (CD/ROM) and shipping/handling on their end. There is no reimbursement
for the photos supplied and none for using them on our website.
Question: Is there a date out there in the future
when this type of project would be completed?
No. As new NSNs are added to the Federal Catalog System (FCS),
some will not have photos available; some NSNs already in the FCS will not
require photos at all; and some NSNs will never have photos available. First
digital images were implemented on 3 April 2003.
Question: Will digital photographs be used by DLIS?
If so, for what purpose?
DLIS has an effort underway to display color photos in its
web-based product. These photos will be displayed with their associated National
Stock Number and logistics data. The primary purpose of these photographs is to
provide our military customers with an additional piece of data to aid in their
research/decision-making process before they requisition an item through their
supply channels. Contractors are welcome to provide digital photographs of their
production items to assist DLIS in providing this additional data. In so doing,
they consent to the following terms:
- There will be no reimbursement for the photographs.
- The photographs will be not returned to contractors.
- The photographs may be altered by DLIS (sized,
brand-names/logos removed, etc.)
- DLIS may use submitted photographs for any official purpose
as needs dictate.
- No guarantees exist that photographs will be used and no
timeframes will be promised.
Question: Are we just doing the New Item entries?
Currently, DLIS-K has focused on the new NSN assignments as a
means of testing the system. That was just to get us going. There was a limited
population in DLIS-K that had the software needed to perform this function. Once
the system is implemented, other ways to find and cross-reference photos will be
used, many possibilities are laid out in the population plan currently being
developed.
Question: Will we be doing all NSN's (7 + million) in
the system?
No. As new NSNs are added to the Federal Catalog System (FCS),
some will not have photos available; some NSNs already in the FCS will not
require photos at all; and some NSNs will never have photos available.
Question: What type of extension is required, JPG,
BMP, etc.?
We prefer to receive images as JPEG (.jpg), GIF (.gif) or
TIFF (.tif) on CD/ROM. Include a cross-reference linking each photographs to its
respective NSN. Just listing their part number really doesn't eliminate our need
to do research and spend time on each individual item.
Question: Are you just adding photos "as is" or are
you doing something to them (i.e. remove logos, names, etc.)?
Both. Based on guidance from our legal department, we must
remove any logos and/or trade names. The photo is to be representative of the
item of supply, rather than a specific item of production. Each image goes
through a sanitizing process where unique identifications are removed,
corrections made to shadowing and backgrounds, and proper sizing for our use is
performed.
