NSF Award to Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center'

The Rutgers Master-II Terascale Computing System will come on-line in February 2001
The next U.S. supercomputing system operating at speeds well beyond a trillion calculations per second will reside at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) through an expected $45-million award from the National Science Foundation (NSF). pulsar B1757 and 'the Duck' "Gatekeeper" Protein Is Key to Cellular Life
Researchers funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and affiliated with Ohio State University have determined that a seemingly ordinary protein called YidC found within the membranes of bacteria serves as a gatekeeper of sorts, allowing into the membranes other proteins essential for the bacteria to live. When YidC isn’t present, the bacteria dies. More...

microbe NSF Supports Workshop on Internet Voting
Last December, President Clinton instructed the National Science Foundation (NSF) to study ways to overcome the barriers that surround Internet voting-e.g., security, privacy, authentication-and make online voting more widely available. The President also asked NSF to examine social aspects of the problem, including access to telecommunications. In response, NSF's Digital Government Program, part of the Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE), has awarded the Internet Policy Institute (IPI), an independent, nonprofit organization, a $95,000 grant to organize a workshop that will examine the feasibility of Internet voting on a national scale. It is expected that the workshop will help to chart a course for research into this complex issue. More...
