NSF
Supports Workshop on Internet Voting
Last December, President Clinton instructed
the National Science Foundation (NSF) to study ways to overcome
the barriers that surround Internet voting-e.g., security, privacy,
authentication-and make online voting more widely available. The
President also asked NSF to examine social aspects of the problem,
including access to telecommunications. In response, NSF's Digital
Government Program, part of the Directorate for Computer and Information
Science and Engineering (CISE), has awarded the Internet Policy
Institute (IPI), an independent, nonprofit organization, a $95,000
grant to organize a workshop that will examine the feasibility of
Internet voting on a national scale. It is expected that the workshop
will help to chart a course for research into this complex issue.
