Special Emphasis Areas

The Division periodically selects research areas for special emphasis. Frequently these are related to national research initiatives such as the U.S. Global Change Research Program or the National Earthquake Hazard Reduction Program. They may also be selected by the Division on the basis of special scientific opportunities as identified by NSF Advisory Committees, or they may be Foundation-wide cross-directorate programs. Such areas of special emphasis are typically described in separate announcements, and may involve special evaluation criteria in addition to the general Foundation requirements for scientific excellence. There are often special budget set-asides for these areas.

Proposals submitted for consideration under an area of special emphasis should cite the specific announcement involved, should address research subjects falling within the range discussed in the announcement, and should specifically address any special evaluation criteria noted in the announcement. Proposals not submitted specifically in response to a special announcement may also be considered for special emphasis funding if they otherwise meet all the criteria established for the special emphasis area.
