Health Protection Research Initiative

CDC 2004 Health Protection Research Initiative

This is the first year of a multiyear CDC Health Protection Research Initiative. The new initiative is designed to promote much needed research in two critical public health areas:

  • Promoting health/or preventing disease, injury or disability; and
  • Protecting people from health threats including infectious, environmental and terrorist threats

The focus this year is to support research on developing effective health promotion and prevention programs at the workplace and to support new training efforts and new centers of excellence.

  • The workplace offers unique opportunities to reach people and help them improve their health, reduce absenteeism and be more productive.
  • A training initiative will support development of a diverse pool of highly trained and creative scientists to carry out the nation’s public health research agenda.
  • New centers for health promotion economics will explore economic solutions and cost-effective strategies for health promotion programs and policies.

This research will provide much needed evidence to support specific programs, practices and policies that affect health decisions made by the American public and those responsible for health policies and programs.
