William A. Eaton
Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Administration
Term of Appointment: 07/13/2001 to present

William A. Eaton, a Minister Counselor in the career Senior Foreign Service, was sworn in as Assistant Secretary of State for Administration on July 13, 2001. Since joining the Department of State in 1979, he has served overseas as administrative counselor in Ankara, Turkey (1994-98), administrative officer in Milan, Italy (1993-94), administrative officer in Istanbul, Turkey (1988-89), general services officer in Moscow, U.S.S.R. (1982-84), and political and consular officer in Georgetown, Guyana (1979-81). In Washington, he has served as Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary for Management (2001), Executive Director of the Bureau of European Affairs (1998-2000), Coordinator in the Office of the Deputy Secretary of State for the establishment of science centers in Moscow and Kiev for former Soviet weapons scientists (1992-94), Special Assistant to the Under Secretary of State for Management (1986-87), and Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary for Diplomatic Security (1985-86) and Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary for Administration (1984).

Mr. Eaton left the Foreign Service for approximately 3 years and served as Executive Director (1991-92) and Director of International Operations (1989-90) of the Young Presidents’ Organization, an international association of young chief executive officers of multi-million-dollar companies in nearly 80 countries around the globe.

A native of Winchester, Virginia, Mr. Eaton was an American Field Service Exchange Student in Diksmuide, Belgium from 1971-72. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Kentucky, Georgia and South Korea. Mr. Eaton was graduated from the University of Virginia with High Distinction (Magna Cum Laude) in International Relations in 1978. After college and before being selected for the Foreign Service, he won a Virginia Press Association award for his writing as reporter/news editor for the Shenandoah Valley-Herald in Woodstock, Virginia.

Mr. Eaton is the recipient of the 2001 Presidential Meritorious Service Award, as well as the Department of State's Leamon R. Hunt Award for Administrative Excellence in 1997, three Superior Honor Awards and two Meritorious Honor Awards.  He was also selected in 2003 for the Honorary National Distinguished Principal Award for outstanding leadership in the field of international education.  He speaks Turkish, Italian, Dutch and Russian.
