DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The person selected for this position will be assigned work primarily in the program areas of Teacher Professional Continuum (TPC) and Instructional Materials-Development (IMD), in science education at K- 8 grade levels. The Program Director is expected to take an active role in program planning, management and outreach in areas of content, grade level and other programmatic areas of individual expertise. In cooperation with management and other professional staff, the incumbent will develop program goals, strategies, and timetables, specifying objectives, defining new initiatives, and recommending plans for development and implementation. This incumbent also has the responsibility for implementing the merit review process in assigned ESIE program areas – e.g., recommending awards and declinations. Conducting substantive negotiations for proposed awards, and overseeing budget revisions. The Program Director oversees program management and ensures that commitments to and by the National Science Foundation (NSF) are met. The person will establish liaisons with education communities (both internal and external to NSF) working on curricula, instructional methods, and education research generally in specified areas of disciplinary and grade- level expertise. Over the next year, the incumbent will learn about the development and administration aspects of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) program with the intent of assuming responsibility for its management. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent experience in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) or in STEM education plus six or more years of research, research administration, and/or managerial experience in STEM education pertinent to the position. Broad knowledge and understanding of elementary and middle school science (grades K-8) that demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of quality teaching; teacher in-service, pre-service and inductions programs, as well as instructional materials in science education. 2. Skill in organizing, implementing and managing a proposal-driven grant program allocating resources to a broad spectrum of program goals. 3. Demonstrated ability to interact with members of the disciplinary, education and professional communities to effectively present and advocate program policies and plans in science education. 4. Knowledge and understanding of budget processes including budget formulation. 5. Research, analytical and technical writing skills which evidence the ability to perform extensive inquiry into a wide variety of significant issues and make recommendations and decisions based on findings.
