BCN Trading Inc. Recalls Mei Yuan Dried Mangoes Due to Undeclared Sulfites

Brooklyn, NY - December 16, 2002 -- BCN Trading Inc., located at 50 Franklin Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11205, is recalling 3.52 oz. plastic bags of Mei Yuan Dried Mangoes because the product contains high levels of undeclared sulfites. People who have severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this product.

The Mei Yuan Dried Mangoes, a product of Mei Yuan Preserved Foods Co., Ltd., Taiwan, was distributed in uncoded, 3.52 oz. plastic bags in the following states: New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Virginia and Florida.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered through routine sampling by NYS Dept. of Agriculture & Markets food inspectors that the product containing sulfites was distributed in packaging that did not declare the presence of sulfites. The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock could occur in certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites. Analysis of the Mei Yuan Dried Mangoes revealed that it contained 30.72 mg of sulfites per serving.

Establishments and consumers who have purchased the 3.52 oz. plastic bags of Mei Yuan Dried Mangoes can return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 718-522-3388.
