BelGioioso Cheese, Inc. Recalls Bags of Fresh Mozzarella Because of Possible Health Risk
Wilmington, CA - July 6, 2001 -- BelGioioso Cheese, Inc. of Wilmington, CA is recalling 300 pounds of its 8-ounce bags of Fresh Mozzarella packed in water because of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
The recalled bags were distributed in Southern California in retail stores.
The product comes in an 8-ounce, printed package marked with an expiration date of 7/16/01 printed on the package.
No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.
The contamination was noted after routine testing by the Food and Drug Administration revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. This recall is being conducted with the knowledge of FDA.
Consumers who have purchased 8-ounce bags of Fresh Mozzarella with a 7/16/01 code date are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-877-863-2123.
