Unenviscerated Fish Recalled Because of Health Risk

FULLERTON, CALIFORNIA, March 30, 1999 - Fil-Fish Manufacturing Co. is recalling unenviscerated Smoked Galunggong (Round Scad) and Dried Herring (Tuyo) because it has the potential to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a bacteria which can cause life-threatening illness or death. Consumers are not to use the products even if it does not look or smell spoiled.

Infection with botulinum can result in the following symptoms: general weakness, dizziness, double vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing. Difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation may also be common symptoms. People experiencing these problems should seek medical attention.

The products were distributed through retail stores in the Garden Grove, California, Jersey City, New Jersey and Chicago, Illinois areas.

The products are packaged in 6 oz. plastic bags with red, white, blue and yellow labels. The products are uncoded. These two products are being recalled.

No illnesses have been reported to date.
