Jensen's Smokehouse Inc. Recalls Jensen's Seattle Style Smoked King Salmon Because of Possible Health Risk
Seattle, WA - August 9, 2000 - Jensen's Smokehouse, Inc. is recalling its random weight (approx. 8 oz) packages of Jensen's Seattle Style Smoked King Salmon because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
The recalled Smoked King Salmon was distributed through retail grocery stores located in western Washington. The product comes in approximately 8 oz. clear plastic packages with a dark green label. A white sticker bearing the lot number is located on the back of the package. The affected lot numbers are 000708, 000714, and 000715.
No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.
The potential for contamination was noted after sample testing by the Food and Drug Administration revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in a package of Jensen's Seattle Style Smoked King Salmon.
The FDA and the company continue to investigate the source of the problem.
Consumers who have purchased the product with lot numbers 000708, 000714, or 000715 are urged to return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-713-8495.
This recall only applies to product bearing the Jensen's Seattle label.
