Jumbo Foods, Inc., Recalls Lunch Box Smoked Turkey Sandwiches Because of Possible Health Risk

MUKILTEO, Washington (September 5, 2000)--Jumbo Foods, Inc., of Mukilteo, WA, is recalling Lunchbox Smoked Turkey Sandwiches dated 092500, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The recalled Smoked Turkey sandwiches were distributed to convenience stores in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Arizona, and southern California.

The sandwiches being recalled weigh six ounces each and bear a red and blue label with an expiration date of 092500. The label has the words Smoked Turkey enclosed in the design of a lunch box.

No illnesses have been reported to date. The recall was the result of a routine sampling program by the Washington State Dept. of Agriculture, which revealed that the finished products contained the Listeria monocytogenes. The company has ceased the production and distribution of the product as FDA and the company continue their investigation as to what caused the problem.

Consumers who have purchased Smoked Turkey sandwiches with a 092500 code date are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact Jumbo Foods, Inc., at 1-800-562-6507.
