Orleans Packing Company Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Sulfites in Zorba Pepperoncini

Hyde Park, MA - November 14, 2001 -- Orleans Packing Company of Hyde Park, MA is voluntarily recalling 350 cases of Zorba Pepperoncini, because it may contain undeclared Sulfites. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to Sulfites run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

Zorba Pepperoncini was distributed in New Jersey and California for further distribution to retail stores in the following states: Wisconsin, Iowa, Florida, Texas, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Georgia, Arizona, and Washington.

The product label states “Zorba Natural Pepperoncini Mild Pickled Peppers Sulfite Free 15 FL. OZ.” The product is packed in glass jars with gold caps. The production code is OCT1703, OCT1803 and NOV703. The code can be found on the top of the cap.

“No illnesses have been reported to date.”

The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the above product containing Sufites was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of sulfites. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the company’s production and packaging processes.

Consumers who have purchased Zorba Pepperoncini are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-524-9284.
