Sonoma Foods Inc. Recalls Sonoma brand Teleme spreadable cheese-Original

SONOMA, CA - May 1, 2001 --Sonoma Foods Inc. is recalling it's Sonoma brand Teleme spreadable cheese-Original from retail stores, due to possible health risk. The recall is a result of a routine sampling by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which revealed that the lots listed below of finished product might contain the bacteria. This product has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in; young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. No illnesses have been reported to date.

Consumers who have purchased Sonoma brand Teleme spreadable cheese-Original with the following consumer package Lot No. 020991, packed in a sleeved 7.5oz rectangle plastic container, are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Retailers who have shipping cases of Sonoma brand Teleme spreadable cheese-Original with the shipping case label Lot No. l0965 packed with the above mention consumer package Lot No. 020991 are asked to remove them from sale and contact the phone number below.

The product has been distributed in the following states:
California, Oregon and Washington

The following stores have been notified to remove from sale:

Northern California:

6 Save Mart Stores and Selected Independent Stores.
Including Sonoma Cheese Deli

Oregon and Washington:
Selected Independent Stores.

The company has ceased the production and distribution of the product as FDA and the company continues their investigation.
