Allied Import Inc. Recalls Chinese Candy Due to Undeclared Sulfites

Brooklyn, NY - February 27, 2003 -- Allied Import Inc., 10 Wyckoff Ave., Brooklyn, N.Y. 11237 is recalling l2oz. plastic bags of Chinese Candy, because the product contains undeclared sulfites. People who have severe sensitivity to sulfites may run the risk of serious life threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this product.

Chinese Candy, a product of China, was distributed to retail stores in New York State in uncoded l2oz. plastic bags.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered through routine sampling by NYS Dept. of Agriculture & Markets food inspectors that the product containing sulfites, was distributed in packaging that did not declare the presence of sulfites. Consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock could occur in certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites. Analysis of the Chinese Candy revealed that it contained 35.7 milligrams per serving.
