Appetizing Plus Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Almonds in Mandel Bread

Brooklyn, NY - January 7, 2002 -- Appetizing Plus of Brooklyn, New York is recalling its packages of "Mandel Bread" because they may contain undeclared almonds. People who have allergies to almonds run the risk of serious life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.

The recalled "Mandel Bread" was distributed to retail stores in Brooklyn. The product comes in clear plastic packages marked with lot #200277 and stamped with the expiration date 1/24/02.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered by NYS Food Inspectors, that the almond-containing product was distributed in packages that did not reveal the presence of almonds. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the company's production and packaging process. Production of the product has been suspended until the company is certain that the problem has been corrected.

Consumers who have purchased packages of "Mandel Bread" are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 718-437-3376.
