Ariza Cheese Company Inc. Recalls Queso Fresco Because of Possible Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Paramount, CA -- August 7, 2002 -- Ariza Cheese Company Inc. is voluntarily recalling 10,000 12-ounce packages of green labeled Queso Fresco Cheese because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria Monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The Queso Fresco was distributed in California and New York through retail grocery stores.

The Queso Fresco is packaged in 12 ounce flat round vacuumed sealed clear bags. The product being recalled is labeled with a use by date of 9/26/02 or earlier. UPC #33136-88262.

There have been no reports of illnesses to date in connection with this problem.

The recall initiated following a routine sampling program by the US FDA, which revealed that the finished product contained the bacteria.

Consumers who have purchased this product in New York, or California are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
