Mason County Fruit Packers Recalls Canned Asparagus Because of Possible Health Risk

Ludington, MI, February 7, 2002 -- Mason County Fruit Packers of Ludington, MI is recalling 255 cases of canned asparagus because it has the potential to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium which can cause life-threatening illness or death. Consumers are warned not to use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled.

Botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning, can cause the following symptoms: general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing. Difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation may also be common symptoms. People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention.

The cans are marked with the code ASPC 126144-11 on the lid.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

The asparagus is packaged in 15 ounce cans under the Wylwood Select, Fancy Cut Green Spears label. Potential distribution was through Save-A-Lot stores located in Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Indiana.

The potentially under processed product was discovered when abnormal cans were seen during routine labeling operations. Whereas no problem product is known to have been shipped, the recall is being conducted in the interest of consumer safety.

Consumers who have purchased the Wylwood asparagus are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-231-929-5937.

The Food and Drug Administration has been notified.
