Consumer Alert: Undeclared Sulfites in Pickled Sour Bamboo Shoot Slices

Brooklyn, NY - June 27, 2002 -- New York State Agriculture Commissioner Nathan L. Rudgers today warned sulfite-allergic consumers and asthmatics to avoid consuming "Consumer Alert: Undeclared Sulfites in Pickled Sour Bamboo Shoot Slices Pickled Sour Bamboo Shoot Slices" due to the presence of undeclared sulfites.

The product is packaged in a two-pound plastic container with the code 66BPBSS02. "Caravelle Pickled Sour Bamboo Shoot Slices" are a product of Thailand. They were distributed nationwide by Anhing Corp., Los Angeles, CA 90031.

Routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets food inspectors revealed the product contained high levels of sulfites, which were not declared on the label.

Sulfites can cause deadly reactions in asthmatics and others suffering sulfite allergies. No illnesses have been reported to date.

Consumers who have purchased "Caravelle Pickled Sour Bamboo Shoot Slices" should return them to the place of purchase.
