Consumer Alert: State Agriculture Commissioner Issues Warning on Orecchiette Salad

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Bayside, NY -- May 15, 2003 --State Agriculture Commissioner Nathan L. Rudgers today warned consumers not to eat "Orecchiette Salad" sold at Bayside Milk Farm, Inc., 35-15 Bell Blvd., Bayside, New York 11361 due to Listeria contamination.

"Orecchiette Salad" is sold from a refrigerated bulk display and is uncoded. The salad is made at the store and was offered for sale May 5, 2003. The salad was sold retail from the store in the Bayside section of Queens.

The problem was discovered as a result of routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets food inspectors. Production of the salad has been suspended while the company investigates the problem.

Listeria is a common organism found in nature. It can cause serious complications for pregnant women, such as stillbirth. Other problems can manifest in people with compromised immune systems. Listeria can also cause serious flu-like symptoms in healthy individuals.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

Consumers who have purchased this product should return it to the place of purchase or discard it.
