State Agriculture Commissioner Issues an Alert on Packaged Beans
New York - April 14, 2000 - State Agriculture Commissioner Nathan L. Rudgers alerted consumers today to the possible improper storage and display of a product labeled "Eight Sweets Bean," which is packed by Shi Shin Food Company, Ltd., Jin Hua Rd., Yung Kang City, Taiwan, and distributed by Summit Import Corporation, 415 Greenwich St., New York New York 10013. This product, vacuum-packed in 10.5 oz. packages, contains no manufacturing code and may fail to have the necessary "Keep Refrigerated" labeling statement on the package. Although the manufacturer places a "Keep Refrigerated" sticker on the back of the package, the product has been found marketed unrefrigerated in an upstate New York retail store.
Routine sampling conducted by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets revealed that the product contains no inherent barriers to bacterial growth at room temperatures and, therefore, must be kept refrigerated in order to prevent the growth of pathogenic organisms and potentially dangerous toxin formation. This product is distributed in the Metropolitan and Upstate New York area.
Consumers who have this product and believe it may have been unrefrigerated should not consume it. They should return it to the place of purchase.
