Allergen Alert: Assorted Candy

Brooklyn, NY - January 18, 2002 -- Blooming Import. Inc located at 45 Bowne St., Brooklyn, NY 11231 is recalling 16oz packages of assorted candy because the product contains undeclared sulfites. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

The candies are packaged in uncoded red plastic containers with clear plastic covers, one type has a picture of a man with two children, the other a picture of a Chinese ship. Product was distributed in the NY Metro area.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered through routine sampling by NYS Dept of Agriculture and Markets food inspectors that the product contained sulfites and was distributed in packaging that did not declare the presence of sulfites. The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reaction in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock can occur in certain sulfites sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more sulfites. Analysis of the assorted candy revealed it contained more than 10 milligrams per serving.

Consumers who have purchased the 16oz package of assorted candy can return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumer with questions may contact the company at (718) 625-6868.
