Cape May Foods Recalls Canned Shellfish Because of Label Error
Cape May, NJ - December 26, 2001 --Cape May Foods, Inc. of Cape May, New Jersey, announces the voluntary recall of LaMonica brand Scungilli packed in 6.5 and 29oz. cans.
The Scungilli was labeled without reference to the presence of sodium bisulfite, a common additive used to preserve color. Some people are allergic to sodium bisulfite and, accordingly, the product label should include reference to the presence of sodium bisulfite so that consumers can be aware and take appropriate precautions.
There have been no instances of injury or problems associated with the product to date. The food product itself is wholesome and fit for human consumption except, for those persons who should avoid foods containing sodium bisulfite. The product recall is presently underway and all distributors' shelves have been cleared of the mislabeled product. Any retailer who may have LaMonica brand Scungilli without labels indicating the presence of sodium bisulfite should return the product to their distributor for properly labeled product. If a consumer has any LaMonica brand Scungilli and they are allergic to sodium bisulfite, they may return the product to the point of purchase or contact Cape May Foods directly (toll free), at: 1-866-CAPEMAY (1-866-277-3629). If a consumer is not allergic to sodium bisulfite, they may use the product as anticipated, the product itself is wholesome and fit for human consumption.
