BCN Trading Inc. Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Allergen in Product

February 8, 1999 - BCN TRADING INC., 50 Franklin Ave., Brooklyn, New York 11205 is recalling 4,884 packages of PAPAYA TREE brand ASSORTED COOKIES because the product may contain undeclared sulfites.

People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

Product was distributed in the NY, NJ, CT, MA, VA areas.

Papaya Tree brand Assorted Cookies are retailed in round, rigid, 23 oz. clear plastic tray containers.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered that product containing sulfites was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of sulfites. The consumption of 10 milligram of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reaction in some asthmatics.

Anaphylactic shock can occur in certain sulfite-sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites. Analysis of the Papaya Tree brand Assorted Cookies revealed that it contained 31.1 milligrams per serving.

Consumers who have 23 oz. packages of Papaya Tree brand Assorted Cookies can return the product to the place of purchase for full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 718-522-3388.
