Food Lion Fudge Royale Ice Cream Recalled

August 21, 2001- Dairy Fresh, LLC announced today that it is voluntarily recalling one-half gallon packages of Food Lion Fudge Royale ice cream. This product may contain peanuts or pieces of peanuts. Individuals with allergies to peanuts run the risk of a serious or life threatening reaction if they consume this product. Dairy Fresh, LLC initiated the recall after peanuts were discovered in a one half-gallon package of Food Lion Fudge Royale ice cream. No illness or allergic reactions have been reported thus far.

The ice cream was manufactured at the Dairy Fresh, LLC plant located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and may have been distributed in Food Lion stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania.

This product comes in square half-gallon containers of Food Lion Fudge Royale ice cream (UPC 35826-00573), which are marked with a code date of 04 12 02, #1.3783 with the last four numbers 1902 through 2200, found on the end flap closest to the bar code. The company believes only a small portion of the production run may contain peanuts.

Consumers with half-gallon packages of Food Lion Fudge Royale ice cream marked with the affected code date are urged to return them to the place of purchase for full refund. Consumers with questions may contact Dairy Fresh, LLC at (800) 446-5577.

Dairy Fresh, LLC stated, "As a food company that has been a part of the community for 50 years, our consumers are our first concern. This concern is shared by our counterparts at Food Lion and we appreciate their assistance in recovering this product. We also want to emphasize that Food Lion is in no way responsible for this matter, and has been extremely cooperative."

The Company added. "Dairy Fresh, LLC has been and continues to be cooperating fully with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services with this voluntary recall."
