Dudek Foods, Inc. Issues a Mislabeling Alert on Undeclared Whey, Wheat, Soy and Certain Dairy Ingredients in Cabbage Soup and Certain Pierogis

Hamtrack, MI - May 23, 2002 -- Dudek Foods, Inc. of Hamtrack, Michigan is recalling 1-quart Kapusniak ("Cabbage Soup") jars and 16 oz. boxed and packaged Pierogi Mushroom, Potato, Potato Cheddar, Potato Chive ("Pierogi") because it may contain undeclared whey, wheat, soy and dairy ingredients. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to whey, wheat, soy and certain dairy ingredients run the risk of an allergic reaction if they consume these products.

Kapusniak (Cabbage Soup) was distributed in Michigan in the metropolitan Detroit area through retail stores such as Farmer Jack, Kowalski, Old Country Deli, Oakridge Markets, Twentieth Century, Danny Zeb's Party Store, and Shoppers Market and at the Dudek Foods retail store.

The product comes in a 1-quart (one-quart) glass jar, with a label clearly marked "KAPUSNIAK" (Cabbage Soup) under the brand name of Dudek Foods, Inc. with an expiration date -- before and including 12/29/02.

Mushroom, Potato, Potato Cheddar, Potato Chive Pierogis were distributed in 16 oz. boxes and packages in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio through Farmer Jack, Kroger and Meijer and other distributor outlets.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered that whey, wheat, soy and certain dairy ingredients contained in the product were distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of whey, wheat, soy and certain dairy ingredients. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the company's packaging process.

The problem is being corrected by replacing labels or exchanging product.

Consumers who have purchased 1-quart (one-quart) glass jars of "Kapusniak" (Cabbage Soup) or the 16 oz. boxed and packaged Pierogis are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at (313) 891-5226.
