Eastern Pacific Trading, Inc. Recalls a "Vacuum Packed Gingko Nut" Because of a Possible Health Risk

Brooklyn, NY - September 8, 2000 - Eastern Pacific Trading, Inc. is recalling "Vacuum Packed Gingko Nut", because it has the potential to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium which can cause life threatening illness or death. Consumers are warned not to use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled.

Botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning can result in the following symptoms: general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing. Difficulty in breathing, weakness or other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation may also be common symptoms. People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention.

The product is also an undeclared tree nut. People who have an allergy or sensitivity to nuts run the risk of serious or life threatening or allergic reaction when consuming this product.

"Vacuum Packed Gingko Nut" was distributed within the New York City area. The product is vacuum packed in a plastic bag without any label. The product itself is a yellow color, without an outer shell. Each package weighs approximately 100g.

No report of any illness in connection to this product has been reported to date.

The product was sampled by NYS Dept. of Agriculture Market.
