Eden Brook Fish Market Inc. Recalls Thirty-Five Pounds of Smoked Trout Because of Possible Health Risk
Monticello, NY - July 3, 2002 -- Eden Brook Fish Market Inc., 73 Pleasant St., Monticello, NY 12701 is recalling its smoked trout code # 0621 because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy persons may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriage and stillbirth among pregnant women.
The recalled smoked trout with code #0621, was sold wholesale and retail, in the New York City, Westchester and Sullivan County areas. No illness has been reported to date in connection with the problem.
The potential for contamination was noted after routine sampling and testing by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Market Food Inspectors revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogens in some of the smoked trout. Production of the product has been suspended while the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets continues their investigation as to the source of the problem.
Consumers who have purchased the smoked trout with code #0621 are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a FULL REFUND. Consumers with any questions may contact the company at (845) 791-4345 or fax us at (845) 791-1601.
