FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Kitchener, Ontario, Canada -- May 18, 2004 -- Colonial Cookies is voluntarily recalling a limited quantity of 7.2 oz. Essensia-brand cookies as some nut cookies being produced may have been incorrectly packaged in bags that did not declare these specific nuts in their ingredient statements.
While no allergic reactions have been reported to Colonial Cookies, people who have an allergy to nuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.
The Essensia line of cookies is sold exclusively through the Albertsons and ACME chain of grocery stores. This voluntary recall involves only those cookies sold in Albertsons or ACME stores in the following states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Louisiana, Maryland, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.
No other Essensia brand products are involved in this voluntary recall that is being coordinated with the assistance of the US Food and Drug Administration.

Consumers can find the date code
on the back, lower right-hand corner of the cookie bag (written sideways, with
text running top-to-bottom). The following in an example of how the date code
for August 13, 2004 is printed on a cookie bag:

**Universal Product Code on Cookie Bags:
The UPC code can
be found on the bottom (underneath) of the cookie package.
The recall was initiated after it was discovered that two different kinds of nut cookies had been incorrectly packaged and distributed in bags that did not declare the presence of these particular nuts.
On learning of the packaging error, Colonial Cookies quickly reviewed related quality assurance processes with its cookie bag supplier to determine the source of the packaging errors. The problem has now been corrected.
Consumers who have purchased the above Essensia brand cookies should return them to the place of purchase for a full refund, whether they have partially-consumed the contents or not.
