Felpausch Food Centers Recall Tuna Fish Because of Possible Health Risk
Hastings, Mich. - June 26, 2001 -- Felpausch Food Centers, Hastings, Mich., is recalling cans of six-ounce Felpausch brand tuna fish because the cans appears to have a packaging defect. Consumers are warned not to use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled. Product testing is under way, but the necessary microbiological tests take two weeks to complete.
Product was distributed in South Central and Southwestern Michigan through
Felpausch grocery stores. Due to the proximity of Coldwater and Dowagiac to
Indiana there is a possibility that some of the product may be found in Indiana.
The product in question is the six-ounce size, Felpausch-brand, canned tuna
fish. The production code appears on the top of the can. The codes being recalled
are as follows:
RDSCV500017, RDSCV500019 and RDSCV500020
If you have any cans of Felpausch brand tuna fish with these specific codes on the can, you should return the product to your local Felpausch store for a complete refund.
NO ILLNESS HAS BEEN REPORTED TO DATE.
The problem at this time appears to be a packaging defect, but further testing is continuing to isolate the exact cause of the defect. The problem was revealed while a state inspector was making some purchases in a local Felpauch store. Felpausch is working very closely with both the Michigan Department of Agriculture and the FDA to resolve the problem.
Consumers who have purchased Felpausch brand tuna fish with the above codes
are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers
with questions may contact the company at 1-800-648-6433)
