Flowers Bakeries Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Egg in Cobblestone Mill Seeded 8-Pack Hamburger Buns

Thomasville, GA - September 12, 2001 -- Flowers Bakeries of Thomasville, Georgia is recalling select codes of Cobblestone Mill seeded 8-pack hamburger buns because the buns may contain undeclared egg as an ingredient. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to egg run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

The Cobblestone Mill seeded 8-pack hamburger buns were distributed to supermarkets and other food stores in West Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Ohio and Virginia.

Only Cobblestone Mill seeded 8-pack hamburger buns with the following codes are involved in the recall: Best if purchased by September 12 code 07 247 with a black twist tie closure; Best if purchased by September 13 code 07 248 with a yellow twist tie closure; Best if purchased by September 15 code 07 250 with a green twist tie closure; Best if purchased by September 17 code 07 252 with an orange twist tie closure; Best if purchased by September 18 code 07 253 with a blue twist tie closure.
No serious illnesses have been reported to date.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered that product containing egg was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of egg. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the company's production and packaging processes.

Flowers Bakeries immediately removed all Cobblestone Mill seeded 8-pack hamburger buns with the codes mentioned above from the market. Only product distributed in West Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia was affected by the recall. Cobblestone Mill seeded 8-pack hamburger buns with Best if purchased by dates of September 19 or later are correctly labeled.

Consumers who have purchased Cobblestone Mill seeded 8-pack hamburger buns with Best if purchased by codes of September 12, September 12, September 15, September 17 or September 18 are urged to return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-660-3590. Caller must enter code 1925# and then extension 294# when prompted.
