Galil Importing Corp. Recalls Sun Dried Tomatoes in Oil Due to Undeclared Sulfites
Syosset, NY - March 5, 2003 -- Galil Importing Corporation at 120 Eileen Way, Syosset, N.Y, 11791 is voluntarily recalling 14.4 ounce jars of "Galil-brand Sun Dried Tomatoes In Oil because the product was found to contain undeclared sulfites.
People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.
Galil Sun Dried Tomatoes In Oil (product of Turkey) are packaged in 14.4 ounce net weight (8.4 ounce drained weight) glass jars, labeled with container code "L33713/Use By 12/3/2003." Product was distributed to food wholesalers and retailers nationwide.
No illnesses have been reported to date.
The recall was initiated after routine sampling by N.Y.S. Department of Agriculture & Markets Food Inspectors revealed that this product contained sulfites which were not declared on the label. The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock can occur in certain sulfite-sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites. Analysis of Galil Sun Dried Tomatoes In Oil revealed that it contains 10.9 milligrams per serving.
Consumers who purchased Galil Sun dried Tomatoes In Oil with the aforementioned container code should return the product to place of purchase for refund. Consumers with questions may contact Galil Importing Corp. at (516) 496-7400.
