Consumer Alert: Undeclared Sulfites in Galil Sun Dried Tomatoes in Oil

Brooklyn, NY - March 24, 2003 -- New York State Agriculture Commissioner Nathan L. Rudgers today warned sulfite-allergic consumers and asthmatics to avoid consuming "Galil Sun Dried Tomatoes in Oil" due to the presence of undeclared sulfites in the product.

The product is being recalled by Galil Importing Corporation, 120 Eileen Way, Syosset, NY 11791. Galil Sun Dried Tomatoes in Oil, a product of Turkey, is packaged in 14.4 ounce glass jars, with code "L21121/Use by 7/30/2004" and has a UPC Number "0 79471 12720 2". Much of the same product coded "L33713/Use by 12/3/2003" was previously recalled March 5, 2003. Products were distributed to food wholesalers and retailers nationwide.

Routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets food inspectors revealed that the product contained high levels of sulfites, which were not declared on the label.

Sulfites can cause deadly reactions in asthmatics and others suffering sulfite allergies. No illnesses have been reported to date.

Consumers who have purchased "Galil Sun Dried Tomatoes in Oil" should return it to the place of purchase.
