Hanmi, Inc. Recalls Zhongqia Brand Cup Jelly Due to Choking Hazards

Chicago, IL - July 15, 2002 -- Hanmi, Inc. is announcing a recall of all flavors of Cup Jelly 12/1000 grams that have Conjac/Konyaku, under ZHONGQIA BRAND because these products pose a choking hazard. The product is distributed to retail establishments in Illinois, Missouri, Minnesota, Michigan, and Indiana. Each mini Jelly cup is about the size of a single serve coffee creamer.

These candies contain the ingredient conjac, konyaku, yam flour, or glucomannan. The Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Food and Drug Administration consider this type of candy to pose a serious choking hazard particularly to infants, children, and the elderly. There have been six deaths associated with this type of candy throughout the United States in recent years.
