Ho's Trading Inc. Recalls Master Chao Sweetened Winter Melon Candy Due to Undeclared Sulfites

Brooklyn, NY - March 12, 2003 -- Ho's Trading Inc. located at 1010 Dean Street, Brooklyn, NY 11238, is recalling 12 oz. plastic bags of Master Chao brand Sweetened Winter Melon candy because the product contains undeclared sulfites. People who have severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this product

The Master Chao brand Sweetened Winter Melon candy, a product of China, was distributed to retail stores in an uncoded, 12 oz. plastic bag in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Virginia, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Illinois.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered through routine sampling by NYS Dept. of Agriculture & Markets food inspectors that the product containing sulfites was distributed in packaging that did not declare the presence of sulfites. The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions is some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock could occur in certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites. Analysis of the Master Chao brand Sweetened Winter Melon candy revealed that it contained greater than 10mg of sulfites per serving.

Establishments and consumers who have purchased the 12 oz. plastic bag of Master Chao brand Sweetened Winter Melon candy can return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 718-622-2288.
