Unviscerated Processed Fish Recalled

Brooklyn, NY, October 2, 2002 - Hong Thai Foods Corp., announced today that it is recalling uneviscerated processed fish distributed from its 35 Bowne Street, Brooklyn, New York location. The product, "Frozen Cooked Mackerel Fish (CA BAC MA HAP)" was discovered by NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets food inspectors during a routine inspection at a retail market in Rochester, New York. It was organoleptically confirmed that the fish had not been eviscerated prior to processing.

The product is packaged in uncoded, sealed plastic bags. It is a product of Vietnam. It was distributed to a grocery store called Ocean Garden in Rochester NY. Hong Thai Foods Corp. purchased the product from Lien Hoa Food Corp., 1850 S. Canal Street, Chicago, IL 60616.

This product may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum spores, which can cause botulism, a serious and potentially fatal food-borne illness.

The sale of this type of fish is prohibited under New York State Agriculture and Markets regulations because Clostridium botulinum spores are more likely to be concentrated in the viscera than any other portion of the fish. Uneviscerated processed fish has been linked to outbreaks of botulism poisoning. Symptoms of botulism include blurred or double vision, general weakness, poor reflexes, difficulty swallowing and respiratory paralysis.

Consumers who have "Frozen Cooked Mackerel Fish (CA BAC MA HAP)" are advised not to eat it.

No illnesses have been reported as of this date.

Consumers who have the product may return it to place of purchase for full refund. Anybody who has any question should contact Soubanh Thammakhoune at 35 Bowne Street, Brooklyn, NY 11231, 718-237-1511/1911.
